Kingdom of the Blind, by Louise Penny, is once again about the characters who live in Three Pines. This time, Armand Gamache, chief of the Surete, Myrna, the bookstore owner, and an outsider, Benedict, a builder, have been chosen to be executors of a will for a woman they barely know.
She had been a cleaning woman for some of the residents, but called herself a Baroness. She thought she was related to the wealthy Rothschild family. The old farm house in the woman’s will is ready to fall down and does fall over Benedict when he goes to look at it as a builder. She left millions to her three children. Was she sane or delusional? Where was the money?
The sub-plot is of Amelia, a young woman that Gamache had befriended and admitted to the Academy. Drugs have been found in her room and she is expelled. Gamache has her followed to find out where the drugs are coming from. He has been blamed for allowing drugs to come into Montreal. He is under investigation. Amelia goes to her old friend, Marc. Meanwhile, Gamache and Jean Guy, his son-in-law, enter the house as it collapses. They rescue Benedict, but find the body of Anthony, the son of the Baroness. Was Anthony’s death an accident when the house fell or was it murder? The coroner says he was hit on the side of the head by a two by four. Murder!
Gamache and Jean Guy go to see the brother, sister, and ex-wife of Anthony. Jean Guy questions the relatives and the homicide crew searches the house for clues. Author Penny is good at setting the scene and showing the emotions. The reader is led to believe the murderer is the sister, Caroline, the brother, Hugo, or Benedict. Take your pick. Jean Guy visits the investment firm Anthony had worked for, and speaks to the CEO. Anthony had loved his job but why had he brought important records home? Jean Guy brainstorms with Gamache and Isobel Lacoste, as they have done for many years. Gamache has spoken with men in Vienna Soon everyone is suspect. Everyone has a secret. Will Gamache stop the newest deadly drug from hitting the streets? Will he find Amelie in time to save her? Author Penny keeps us in suspense to the end.
