The Moth Catcher

Review by Priscilla Comen
“The Moth Catcher” by Ann Cleeves is a page-turner of a mystery. Detective Vera Stanhope is an overweight, serious leader of policemen and women who are confronted by three murders in an upper class suburb of London. The peaceful farm land is owned by several couples who have retired there. They get together on Friday nights for drinks and fun.
Annie and Sam have a daughter, Lizzie, who is in prison, but will return to her parents soon. Lucas was a successful business man and his wife Lorraine, is an amateur artist who loves living there. Lucas is bored and trying to write a book. Vera’s side-kicks are Joe and Holly who do what Vera tells them. Holly sees things clearly and Joe loves getting away from home occasionally, where his little kids are troublesome. Percy lives with his older daughter, Susan, and he found the first murder victim. Two of the victims had a common interest in moths and had set traps for them.
Author Cleeves is a master at gathering large groups of people and making the reader suspect each of them to be the murderer. This book does just that. Jason Crow was Lizzie’s lover and led her into trouble a while ago. Will she go to see him when she gets out of prison? Will he lead her astray again? Her parents worry about her and smother her too much.
“Vera” is a series on television, but you can enjoy turning the pages and find this on the new mystery shelf of your community library.
