No One Knows, by J.T.Ellison is the story of Aubrey when her husband Josh disappeared five years ago. Aubrey lives alone with her Weimaraner dog, Winston. She runs many miles each day to get her mind off her misery. She and Josh had a beautiful, happy marriage until the evening of a friend’s bachelor engagement party. Josh disappeared without a trace. After five years, his mother had him declared legally dead so she could collect the insurance money. Daisy, Josh’s mother, remembers how Josh had come to her crying after Aubrey’s adopted parents had died in an accident. He asked for Aubrey to be brought to their home, into their lives. His mom said "No".
After running sixteen miles, Aubrey meets her friend, Meghan, at Frothy Joe’s, a bar where both women work. She meets Chase, who looks and sounds exactly like Josh. This is Nashville, Tennessee and songwriters mix with country music stars, students, and soccer moms. Chase asks Aubrey to have a drink. The author flashes back to when Daisy’s husband, Tom, gave her a new Mercedes she’d been coveting. She never liked Aubrey, thought her a brat. She never thought her son would marry her.
After love-making with Chase, the next morning, Aubrey finds a note saying thanks. Aubrey thinks there is a connection between Josh and Chase. Their love-making was great. We learn that Aubrey was in a foster home after her parents died. Her foster brother, Tyler, comes to see her after getting out of jail. He needs money, and she gives him some. He tells her Josh was involved with bad guys. They may have killed him. Later that night, Chase comes to her house at four A.M. He couldn’t wait to see her.
Years back, when Josh and Aubrey go to a cafe for sodas, a man stopped by their table, and told Josh he is his father. Josh’s mother had told him his father was dead. After the man leaves, they go to the library and look at old newspapers for the year Josh’s dad disappeared. The article tells of his dad’s arrest for murder. This is how Josh learns of his father. When Aubrey tells her story to the police, they don’t believe her about Josh’s disappearance. They depict her as a devious liar with a sordid past. She tells the whole story to Chase.
Later, Daisy has too much to drink, sees a man on Aubrey’s porch who looks exactly like Josh, and slams her car into Aubrey’s living room. She is taken to the hospital, and Chase helps Aubrey answer questions from the police. At the hospital, Aubrey is stopped by a man who gives her his card. It says he is a private investigator, Derek Allen. He says Josh is alive. Daisy has written on a pad, “Not dead.” What is the truth? Aubrey’s friend, Meghan, will help her because her boyfriend is a P.I. Josh might have been into some shady business. Author Ellison is the author of a TV series on Nashville Public Television and has us in her grip.
Six years back, Josh met Derek Allen when he was at medical school and needed another job to survive. Daisy, almost dead, reveals she had two sons. Aubrey has a dream in which Josh is with another woman. Five million dollars in insurance is coming to her soon. Her brother, Tyler, says he set Josh up as a drug dealer with Derek Allen. Did Josh get involved with a bad crowd because he needed money? Who were Daisy's two sons? The twists and turns take us on a roller coaster ride until the end.
