Anything Is Possible by Elizabeth Strout begins with Tommy going to town to buy his 82 year old mother a birthday present. On the way he passes his old high school, thinks about his past and Lucy Barton. Author Strout wrote the best seller My Name is Lucy Barton. This book re-visits her when she is living in New York City as a successful novelist. Tommy passes Pete working on his farm, picks him up in the car. They chat a while. Later a counselor at the local middle school sees a student, Lila Lane. Lila makes nasty remarks to Patty, the counselor, who sends her out of her office. Lila has good grades. Her aunt is Lucy Barton. She looks like her.
Patty stops at the book store, sees an old beau, Charlie, and buys Lucy Barton’s new book, a memoir. Patty goes to her mother’s apartment and hires a woman to come every day to care for her. She has lunch with her friend Angelina, and tells her about the student Lila Lane. She reads Lucy Barton’s book and feels Lucy understood her. Author Strout takes daily life and gives it meaning. As in going to the post office and sitting on the steps with Charlie. They go out together, and word gets around the town.
Next, Yvonne and Karen, Lucia, and Tomasina go to a photography festival. Yvonne stays at the home of Linda and Jay who watch her through a one-way mirror, when she’s sleeping, or in the bathroom. The police come to question Linda and Jay after Yvonne reports them. Lucy Barton comes to visit her brother Pete and sister Vicki after an absence of many years. She has a panic attack, then returns to New York and her successful career as a writer. Charlie stays at Dottie’s B & B one night and finds Dottie is related to Lucy. Author Strout ties them all together. After all, anything is possible.
