Sunday Silence by Nicci French is the most recent continuing story by this married team of authors. Their protagonist is psychoanalyst Frieda Klein, who is always in the middle of trouble—big trouble. This time it’s a dead body under her floor boards at home, and a patient she has been treating who is killed. Her constant friends from “Monday” through “Saturday” titles are Karlsson, a detective, Chloe, her young niece, Olivia, her alcoholic sister, and Josef, from Ukraine who can fix anything and cooks delicious healing dishes from homeland recipes.
In this latest book, Josef’s son, Alexei, comes from the Ukraine to live with Josef after his mother dies. Frieda’s other friend Rueben, is attacked, beaten, and badly hurt. He’s also dying of cancer. Frieda urges them all to live together at Rueben’s house to protect them from the crazy killer who wants to harm Frieda by killing her friends. A previous murderer named Dean Reeve was thought to have died in an earlier book, but Frieda knows he is alive and dangerous. These authors are adept at taking the reader through twists and turns of the complicated plot with several suspects.
One suspect is a newspaper journalist who has been covering the murders and knows too much about them. Petra, the newest police officer on the case, questions Daniel Blackstock and his wife Lee. She puts a tail on them to follow where they go after Yvette, another officer, disappears. But London is a huge city and has many deserted warehouses and half-finished apartments. Will the police and Frieda find Yvette before she is murdered? Authors Nicci and French lead us on a tour filled with suspense to the very end.
