Murder on the Left Bank
Cara Black
Review by Priscilla Comen
Murder on the Left Bank, by Cara Black, is the most recent delightful episode of Aimee Leduc who solves every mystery in her flea market-designer jacket and Hermes bag. She has a baby now (by Melac) and must hire a sitter, Babette, to care for Chloe while she’s off to her office to work with Rene, her dwarf computer genius.
In this episode, a young man, Marcus, has been murdered while carrying a notebook that describes gangsters’ names and crimes. He was to take the notebook to the Justice Dept. Aimee is asked by an attorney-friend to investigate the murder of Marcus and his girlfriend. She dashes around Paris on her motor scooter (it has a sidecar for Chloe) and gets arrested for assaulting a man she was tailing. At the same time she must attend meetings and receptions for clients she also is home, rocking Chloe to sleep or feeding her dog, Miles Davis. Author Black takes us from Isle Saint Louis to the Quai de Tournelle to the Eiffel Tower to find the “perps.” It’s a great tour.
People help Aimee: Serge, the morgue assistant gives her the autopsy report on Marcus; Morbier, her godfather who is a retired, paralyzed cop; her friend Martine, a journalist who will write the true story. When her friend Naomi’s baby is kidnapped, Aimee fears for her own Chloe’s safety. She allows Melac, the baby’s father and the baby’s grandmother (who has suddenly reappeared on the scene), to take Chloe to Brittany to safety.
Will Aimee find the important notebook? Will Chloe come home? Will the gang called The Hand" be prosecuted? Find this on the new mystery shelf of your Mendocino Community Library.
