The Day of the Dead

The Day of the Dead, by Nicci French, the talented couple who write together about the psychologist, Frieda, and her mis-adventures. This is supposedly the final book in the series. We hope not their final book.
This begins with a car crashing into a shop window in London. Two people die, including the man at the steering wheel. But it turns out he was dead before the crash occurred. The investigation begins. Who is the dead man? Why did the car roll down the hill and crash?
Inspector Bill Dugdale is in charge of the case, as it’s now a crime of murder. Lola is writing her college dissertation on criminal behavior, and Hal Bradshaw, her advisor, suggests she deconstruct Frieda Klein. In her quest, Lola meets Liz Barron, the newspaper reporter, and Josef, Frieda’s old friend and fix-it man from Poland. Authors Nicci French know how to increase the tension, little by little, character by character.
A body is found hanging and burning on a post over a bonfire. The police under Dugdale discover who it is. Liz Barron has a drink or two or four in bar and a stranger walks her to the metro on her way home. Later, her body is found too. Lola looks for Frieda, finds her at a cemetery, and goes home with her. Lola had seen the notorious serial killer Dean Reeves fishing on the bank of a river, though she didn’t know it was him. Frieda showed her a photo of Reeve.
A man on a bicycle is run down near a river. Frieda thinks this is Reeve’s plan to send her messages with these murders, all near underground rivers. The police seem hapless. Josef and his friend Stefan are building a roof garden and balcony at Frieda’s house while she is hiding elsewhere. Frieda and Lola move from one safe house to another as Reeve keeps up his killing spree. Lola’s best friend is killed and they move again, disguising themselves. Who will be next? Will Frieda win this battle of wits or will Dean Reeve? The ending will astound you. Find this exciting novel on the new mystery shelf of your Mendocino Community Library.
